Some freelance sites have made it compulsory for both the buyers and service providers to use the Escrow feature. This is to make sure that both parties [service providers and buyers] are safe: in fact, the use of escrow system also ensures that the freelance site is also safe [they will also get their share of the money which is the Fee they charge].
However at SL and FL, use of escrow feature is not yet compulsory.
SL recently added a very handy feature which will mainly benefit the programmers.
Users can now select an option, while bidding, which tells buyers in advance that they will only do the job if escrow is used.
In the past, programmers had to first place their bids or/and they had to send a private message to the buyer in order to tell him that they will only work if escrow is used. Then programmers had to wait for the reply from the buyer. All this process/communication wasted quite some time but now, users at SL can simply select an option, while bidding, which will tell buyers that escrow use is must.
You will notice a Lock Sign [bluish in color] in front of some bids. This sign tells buyers about the escrow requirement.
